Lemon cultivation gains popularity in Barguna

Lemon cultivation is gaining popularity among the farmers in six upazilas of the district due to economic prospect of the crop.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said a total of 315 bighas of land have been brought under lemon cultivation in six upazilas of the district.
Many farmers in the district who achieved self-reliance and changed their lot through lemon cultivation during the last few years are being highly interested to cultivate lemon. Farmers of the district have been cultivating various high yielding of lemon commercially.
Hedaytul Islam, a lemon cultivator of Boro Ankujanpara village under Taltoli upazila said, “I have been getting good profit cultivating lemon on commercial basis for the last several years.”
Lemon cultivator of Karuna village under Betagi upazila Raihan Mir said that, he has cultivated lemon on three bighas of land at a cost of Taka 60,000 and he is expecting to earn Taka 50,000 as profit without his investment.
Now lemon is selling at Taka 20 to 24 per hali (four pieces) in the local markets and is being sent to other parts of the country after meeting local demands.
Deputy Director of DAE Ashok Haldar said they encouraged farmers and providing training on growing lemons as the soil and climate of the district is suitable for lemon farming.
Farmers are also showing their interest in its cultivation as they are making good profit.
