Lemon cultivation gains momentum in Bogra

The juicy fruit lemon has been cultivated abundantly in homestead for the last few years across Bogra district including a vast Barind area. Farmers of the district are getting a high yield of the lemon than other sort of fruit as the weather condition is favourable.
Department of Agriculture Extension sources said, around 1, 18,000 small, middle and big size lemon trees have been cultivated both in top and homestead as a trade.” The farmers are showing more interest to grow lemon in the area as it is proved more profitable in a short time in short cropland.” sources added.
 While visiting this correspondent found that a several hundred of farmers of the district have involved themselves in lemon cultivation in the fertile lands and top of Dupchanchia, Kahaloo, Adamdighi, Nandigram ,Gabtoly, Sariakandi, Sonatola and sadar upazila of the district considering its economic aspect. A lemon cultivator Abu Juwel of Dupchanchia upazila said,
“I have planted 50 pieces of indigenous species of lemon trees in my roof of my resident from our agricultural fair arranged by upazila administration last three years with Tk. 1000 and I have already earned Tk. 10,000 from the cropland.”  
“The lemon traders of the different district including Dhaka visit our local kitchen market to purchase the fruit with Tk, 10 to 15 per haly (four pieces) when the farmers sell them managing local demand.” he added. Ramjan Ali, a farmer of Fapor union under Sadar upazila told that he cultivated 0.25 acre of lemon tree during the current season which spending tk. 6000 and I earn Tk. 12,000 selling them.
The lemon grower Safiq of Sonatola upazila said, “DAE official encourage us to grow more lemon instead of other ones.”
“They also provided farmers with logistic support and necessary training to achieve the bumper yield.” they added. DAE Deputy Director Chandi Das said, we have arranged a training programme how to cultivate more lemon in cheep cost and distribute a standard quality tree among interested farmers.
