Writ filed: Order on Sept 26: Legal actions against Tampaco accused sought

A writ petition has been filed with the High Court (HC) Division of the Supreme Court seeking legal actions against the accused in the Tampaco Foils factory fire incident.
The petitioners have also sought the High Court directives about payment of compensation to the victims.
A HC bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Ashish Ranjan Das heard the petition on Wednesday and fixed September 26 for delivering its order.
Dr Sharif Bhuiyan and Barrister Tanim Hossain Shawon stood for the writ petitioners, while Senior lawyer and Vice-Chairman of Bangladesh Bar Council Advocate Abdul Baset Majumder represented the factory owner.
Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST), Ain O Shalish Kendro (ASK), and Bangladesh Environment Lawyers Association (BELA) filed the writ on September 19, demanding compensation for the victims.
On September 10, the Tampaco Foils factory caught fire in which about 35 people died and 50 others were seriously injured.
After the incident, the owner of the factory said that each victim would be paid Tk 25,000 as compensation. On the other hand, the Deputy Commissioner of the Gazipur District said that each deceased’s family would be given Tk 20,000 for burial purpose.
Two cases have already been filed against the owner of the factory Syed Md Mokbul Hossain. Gazipur Police, however, blamed officials of the factory partially for the fire incident.
Abdul Quader Patwary, father of a deceased worker filed the case with the Gazipur Police Station accusing eight persons, including owner’s wife Parvin Akhter, Manager Tanvir Ahmed, Managing Director Shafiqur Rahman, Manager (Administration) Monir Hossain, Manager Samir Ahmed, Manager Hanif and Deputy Assistant Director Alamgir Hossain.
