Left-leaning students against bringing body to Shaheed Minar

Chhatra Sangram Parishad, an alliance of different left-leaning student organisations, has urged the authorities of Dhaka University not to allow bring the body of Dr Piash Karim to the Central Shaheed Minar.
Dr Pias Karim, a Professor of Brac Univeresity’s Department of Economics and Social Science, died of cardiac arrest Monday morning.
A delegation of Chhatra Sangram Parishad, led by president of Bangladesh Chhatra Moitri Bappadittya Bosu, made the request when the parishad members met DU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique at his office on Monday afternoon.
The VC responded positively and asked Proctor Dr Amzad Ali not to give permission in this regard.The family members earlier announced that the body of Piash Karim would be kept at the Central Shaheed Minar from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm tomorrow (Wednesday) enabling people from all walks of life to pay their homage to him.
Dr Amzad Ali said that the DU authorities won’t allow bringing the body of Pias Karim to the Shaheed Minar as he in different occasions made controversial comments about the Liberation War. Piasd Karim was also involved with anti-Liberation War organizations, he said.
The DU authorities have taken the stance in response to the request of the Chhatra Sangram Parishad, the Proctor said.
Bappadittya Bosu said that besides the Liberation War, Piash Karim was also criticised for his controversial remarks over the trial procedure of the International Crimes Tribunal. He also took stand against the Shahbagh Gonojagoron Mancha, Bosu said.
Meanwhile, ‘Slogan Ekattor’, a cultural organisation, also announced that they would resist bringing the body of Pias Karim to the Shaheed Minar as the holy place will be defamed if the body is kept there.
