Increased fee: Left-leaning DU students observed strike

Progressive Student Alliance (PSA), a platform of some left leaning student organizations, on Tuesday observed a daylong strike at the Dhaka University (DU) on Tuesday protesting the increasing of fees and continuing evening courses in all departments.
The students locked the main gates of Arts and Social Sciences faculties. No class was held during the strike period took place in and around the campus.
The students submitted a memorandum to DU Vice-Chancellor Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique to press their four demands.
The demands include ban on all evening courses in the public universities
and cancellation of all extra fees, withdrawal of all cases filed against the progressive students, giving medical support to the injured students of Rajshahi University, and withhold of the decision of Tk one lakh and thirty-seven thousand extra fees for studying in Television and Film Studies Department.
Vice-Chancellor (VC) AAMS Arefin Siddique said, “The university took this decision after thorough discussion.”
Prof AJM Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan, Chairman of Department of Television and Film Studies, defended their action saying, the increased fees were for covering costs. “But it is less than eight percent of what is charged in private universities.”
