Phulbari Anti-coalmine Day observed: Leaders threaten greater movement if 6- point demands not met

Leaders of National Committee for Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Port Protection at a rally on Tuesday have threatened greater movement if their 6-point demans are not met within 3 months.
Three youths were shot dead on August 26, 2006 as law enforcers fired bullets on anti-coalmine protesters.
Marking the Phulbari Tragedy Day, leaders of National Committee of Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Port Protection and Sammilito Peshajibi Sangathan organised meetings. Wreaths were also placed at the monument remembering the slain at Chhoto Jamuna River in Phulbari upazila of Dinajpur. Different organisations brought out morning processions.
At the rally held at Nimtolamoar in the upazila leaders threatened greater movement if the 6-point demands are not fullfilled which were signed eight years ago .
‘If they go for open pit mining, there will underground water shortage in the region, and the water shortage will hamper the crop production, and if crops are not produced properly than people of the region will suffer for their surviving’ added Anu Mohammad, Member Secretary of National Committee for Oil, Gas, Power Mineral Resources, Port and Power Protection.
Local committee of National Oil, Gas organized the rally at Nimtola intersection in Phulari upazila.
Sheikh Mohammad Shahidullah convener and Anu Mohammad Member Secretary of the committee along with other leaders were present at the rally.
The speakers heavily criticized government’s recent decision for open pit mining at northern in northern part of Barapukuria coal mine.
