Police on Sunday charged on activists and barred a procession of Left Democratic alliance (LDA) when it was going towards the power and energy ministry in Bangladesh Secretariat demanding review of its decision to hike gas price. At that time, around 20 agitators injured in this clash.
The law enforcers barred the agitators when the
procession reached west side of the secretariat adjacent to National Press Club at noon. Faced with barbwire barricades, they staged a short rally there.
Earlier, LDA gave a seven-day ultimatum to the government for reviewing its decision of the gas price hike. Even on July 7, the alliance observed a countrywide half-day hartal protesting the government decision and review thereof.
Musharraf Hossain Nannu, the Coordinator of the Left Democratic Alliance in a brief rally said that the rising of gas price would increase the price of all the necessary goods and the cost of production in the factory. Its impact will affect the life of the general people. We recommend the government to back down from this decision. However, if the government does not change their position, they will hold conference of parties’ representatives in Dhaka on July 19 and will awaken the country men through movement. Communist Party’s (CPB) Ruhin Hossain Prince said the government is increasing the price of gas illogically.By it, they want to exploit the poor people. We will not let it happen.
