The Pro-Awami league lawyers and the pro-BNP lawyers of the Supreme Court on Sunday tussled over a statement issued by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on ex-President Ziaur Rahamn.
The statement was issued on Saturday on a pad of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) by the organization’s Senior Assistant Secretary Mahmud Hasan saying that SCBA Secretary Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal protested the Prime Minister’s speech defaming former President Ziaur Rahman.
The pro-BNP lawyers on Sunday held a press briefing in the bar Secretary’s room.
In the briefing, Barrister Kazal said, “After so many years of independence, the Prime Minister has raised questions about the contribution of Shaheed Zia to the war of liberation. She defamed freedom fighter and Sector Commander Ziaur Rahman. We, on behalf of the Supreme Court Bar Association, strongly condemn and protest against such misleading and unrealistic statements.”
But during the press briefing in his room, the pro-Awami League lawyers were shouting outside saying that the press briefing was not on behalf of the SCBA.
Later the pro-Awami League members in the SCBA executive committee held a separate press briefing in a hall of the SCBA protesting the statement issued by Advocate Mahmud Hasan, Assistant Secretary of the SCBA, quoting the Secretary Ruhul Quddus Kazal.
Referring to the recent clashes between BNP men and police at Dhaka’s Chandrima Udyan, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina recently wondered why did they engage in violence despite knowing very well that the party founder Ziaur Rahman’s remains were not there.
“BNP engaged in fights at Chandrima Udyan. Doesn’t it know that there’s no grave or remains of Zia?…That Zia is not there? They know it very well! Why do the leaders stage such drama? Khaleda Zia is also aware of it,” she said while virtually addressing a program from her Gono Bhaban residence.
