Staff Reporter :The certified copy of the Appellate Division’s verdict regarding the death sentence of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman was received by his lawyers on Thursday.Now the defence will go through the 579-page verdict to file a review petition about the death sentence to the apex court, the defence counsel Advocate Shishir Munir said. As per law, the Jamaat leader has 15 days time to file a petition for a review of the Appellate Division. But it is not clear from when the count will start, the other defence lawyer Advocate Tajul Islam said. “Normally, the defence gets 15 days time to file a review prayer after receiving the certified copy. But, in this case, it is not clear to us how many days we’ll get to prepare our defence as the verdict was read out before Kamaruzzaman in the prison a few days earlier,” he said. Kamaruzzaman received death penalty in two charges — Sohaghpur genocide and the murder of Golam Mostafa. The Appellate Division sustained his death sentence in the charge of Sohaghpur genocide by a majority decision but unanimously reduced death penalty to life long imprisonment in the murder charge of Golam Mostafa.
