Bangladesh will face sub-continental oppositions India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka at home in the next cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC), a media release from International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed.
The second cycle of The World Test Championship will begin from August 2021, with the cut-off date being 31 March of 2023, where all nine teams will play six Test series, three at home and three abroad.
In this three-year cycle, Bangladesh will play Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka at home and tour South Africa, New Zealand, and West Indies. ICC has also brought some changes in the points system of WTC, confirmed the acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Geoff Allardice.
“We received feedback that the previous points system needed to be simplified. The Cricket Committee took this into consideration when proposing a new, standardized points system for each match. It maintained the principle of ensuring that all matches in a WTC series count towards a team’s standing while accommodating series varying in length between two Tests and five Tests,” said acting CEO of ICC in the statement
Each match of the upcoming WTC will now be contested for the same number of points – 12 for a win, four for a draw, and six for a tie, moving away from the previous system which saw the same number of points allocated to each series, divided across the number of matches played.
Bangladesh played in India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka and hosted West Indies in the previous WTC cycle, with Australia and New Zealand not touring Bangladesh due to the pandemic situation.
Bangladesh will not be facing England and Australia for the second WTC cycle in a row, which means that the Tigers will have to look beyond 2023 to play against them.
