Latif returns, leaves HSIA for unknown destination

Staff Reporter : Expelled leader of ruling Awami League and former ICT Minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui returned to Dhaka from Kolkata on Sunday night.Facing arrest warrant, he landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport boarding an Air India flight at about 8:40 pm, immigration officials said.He stayed at the VVIP Lounge of the airport under the surveillance of Armed Police Battalion for about one hour. The immigration authorities also did not confiscate his passport. Siddiqui came out of the airport surrounded by a team of uniformed and plain clothed police at about 9:40 pm and left for an unknown destination by boarding a car dodging newsmen.Meanwhile, different dailies on their online versions reported that Siddqui was staying at his Dhanmondi residence in the city. When contacted, State Minister for Home Affairs Assaduzzaman Khan Kamal told The New Nation that he came to know that Siddiqui has returned. Now action would be taken against him as per law, he added. Dr Kamal Uddin Ahmed, additional secretary [political], Ministry of Home Affairs, told The New Nation that he was not aware of Siddiqui’s return, or arrest. There are, however, widespread speculations that Siddiqui has returned Dhaka following an arrangement with the government.  Sources said that he might be arrested at any time. At least a dozen of cases have been filed against him with different police stations across the country following his derogatory remarks against Tablig and Hajj.Meanwhile, different religious organizations, including Hefazat-e -Islam and Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat, threatened to launch tough movement if Latif is not arrested immediately. Hefajat-e-Islami said that they would enforce continuous shutdown if Latif is not arrested within by Sunday night. Besides, the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat announced that they would besiege capital city Dhaka if he is not arrested within twenty four hours.
