Most of the shopping spots in the Barisal city became crowded by the rush of last moment Eid shoppers of all ages only two or three days before Eid- Ul- Fitr.
Traffic movement restricted in the man commercial areas of Chawkbazar, Katpatty, Line Road, Bazar Road to make easy for the shoppers of mainly dresses, caps, jainamaj, shoes, and cosmetics, kitchen market items from morning till late night.
Rush of lower even middle income groups were seen at hawker markets, footpath and makeshift shops searching for buying items for dearest ones in affordable price within their limitations.
Kitchen market sources said, prices of vegetables, salad items, fishes were low while prices of pilau rice, vermicelli, sugar, spices, meats and other food items favored during Eid dining were at least 20-30 percent higher than pre-Ramadan period.
Sale of cheap mobile phone sets and Eid greeting cards were not bad as other gift items became costlier than previous year.
One of the most necessary things for Eid is cap, Jainamaj and Attar used to attend Eid congressional prayer.
‘The amount of caps, Jainamaj, Tasbih, Surma and Attar that sell during the period accounts for more than 60 per cent of the annual demand. The sale begins from early Ramadan and continues till next Eid-ul-Azha,’ said Motahar Hossain, owner of a cap, Jainamaj and Attar shop at Hemayetuddin Road Kasai Mosque, known as the largest retail market of the items in the city.
Sylhet Correspondent adds: Sylhet is witnessing last-minute shopping spree even as the rush of buyers has lessened a bit as the people started to leave the Sylhet to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr with their near and dear ones in their native places.
The correspondents saw rush of shoppers at different shopping centres including Modhubon, Sylhet palaza, Shukria market, Blue water, Kakoli, Millennium, City center, Lotif Market, Al Hamra Shopping city on Saturday. A shopkeeper at Al Hamra Shopping city, told that the rush of shoppers increased from noon. He said they were keeping their shops open until 2am for last several days.
An NGO employee Shorif said: “I could not come for shopping earlier as I was preoccupied. Today I shopped for everyone and will go (village) home tonight. “Panjabi shops at Zindabazar area were jam packed with buyers. Businesses selling perfumes and prayer caps and mats also saw huge rush.
