The government has launched a Tk 26.48 billion project for the development of 31 Upazilas.
This project and four others were cleared by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday. Together, they are estimated to cost Tk 34.45 billion.
Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal told reporters that Tk 25 billion of the expenditure would be met by foreign aid.
Under the ‘Third Urban Management and Infrastructure Development’ project, 31 Upazilas will see the revamping of infrastructure and poverty-curbing and gender-friendly good governance.
Good governance and modern physical infrastructure will be ensured in municipal areas with strong financial management, people’s participation, accountability, transparency and controlled urban development.
The project, to be implemented by the local government ministry, will be completed by June 2020.
ECNEC also approved the Netrakona-Dhrmapasha-Jamalganj-Sunamganj-Sylhet road development project, expected to be completed within June 2015.
A project to construct a road to support the Birishiri-Vijaypur land port was also approved.
Another Tk 350 million has been allocated to complete the Shomobay Bhaban – headquarters of the Department of Cooperatives – including the installation of solar panels.
The project is expected to be over by 2016.
The National Agricultural Technology Project (First Phase) with a budget of Tk 7 billion was also cleared.
The project is to take up agricultural research based on farmers’ needs and to also involve cultivators in the research work.
