Language movement activist Azharuddin passes away

Language movement activist Bhasha Soinik AKM Azharuddin, 82, passes away at BARDEM hospital in Dhaka on Thursday evening.
He was under treatment there since April 17 due to old age complications, said Abubakar Sohel, son of Azharuddin.
Azharuddin born in 1932 at South Alekanda area of the city and actively participated in the language movement activities in Barisal as a student of class-x of A K Institution of the city.
He led the procession of school students in Barisal on February 22, 1952 chanting slogan ‘Rashtra Bhasha Bangla Chai’ and protesting the firing on language movement activists at Dhaka on February 21.
As a social worker he founded juvenile voluntary organization ‘Kishore Majlish’ in his area in 1953, organized and participated in liberation war of 1971.
He was a retired official of Water Development Board and left 3 daughters, 5 sons and a lot of admire well-wishers.
His dead body would be brought to Barisal on Friday and would be buried in Barisal Muslim Gorosthan after holding namaje janaza at Kishore Majlish following Juma prayer, family sources said.
 
Different socio-cultural-political personalities and organizations including BCC Mayor, Bangladesh Girl Guides Association expressed their deep condolence at the demise of Bhasha Soinik Azharuddin and remembered his contributions to the language movement, liberation war and the society and country.
