Different public and private universities/ institutions including Dhaka University (DU), Jagannath University (JnU), Jahangirnagar University (JU), Rajshahi University (RU), Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Khulna University, International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT), Southeast University (SEU) observed International Mother Language Day on Saturday with due solemnity and remember those who sacrificed their lives for the mother tongue in 1952.
In November 1999, the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) proclaimed Ekushey February as the International Mother Language Day, which has been observed every year to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.
Dhaka University (DU) observed Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day with due solemnity and remember those who laid down their lives for the mother tongue in 1952. DU Vice-chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique and others paid deep homage to language movement martyrs by placing floral wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar on behalf of Dhaka University.
The Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day was observed at Jahangirnagar University (JU) campus on Saturday with due solemnity. JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Farzana Islam paid deep homage to the martyrs of the historic Language Movement by placing wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar on the campus with the clock striking one-minute past zero hours (midnight) on Friday.
JU Treasurer Prof Dr Abul Khair, Registrar Abu Bakr Siddique, dean of different faculties, provosts of dormitories and teachers of the university were present with the VC to pay homage to the martyrs.
Among others, JU Mahila Club, JU Teachers’ Association (JUTA), JU Journalists’ Association (JUJA), JU Officers’ Association, JU debate organization, JU Physically Development Foundation, Bangladesh Chhatra League JU unit as well as other different political, cultural and social organizations paid their respect to the martyrs of the historic Language Movement. The national flag was flown at half-mast at all academic and administrative buildings of the campus.
Marking the day, a painting competition for children was held at Old Arts building on the campus while JU VC Professor Dr. Farzana Islam addressed the function as the chief guest and distributed prizes among the winners.
Earlier, a Provat Ferry (mourning procession), led by JU VC, was brought out from JU Teachers’ and Officers’ club premises, which ended at the Central Shaheed Minar after parading the main streets of the campus.
Rajshahi University (RU) observed the historic Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day on Saturday with paying tribute to the martyrs of the language movement, who laid down their lives for the mother tongue in 1952.
The university shaheed minar was well decorated for the observance of the day where RU Kendrio Sangskritik Jote staged cultural events from evening to midnight.
As the clock struck one minute-past zero hour, the university authority led by RU Vice-Chancellor Prof Muhammad Mizanuddin and Pro-VC Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan paid homage to language movement martyrs by placing floral wreaths at the altar of Shaheed Minar.
After placing the wreaths, they stood there in solemn silence for a while as a mark of respect to the martyred language movement heroes. Later, Rajshahi University Journalist Association (RUJA), Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) RU unit, RU Awami Ain Chhatra Parishad, Residential halls of the university and different socio-political, cultural organizations also placed wreath at the shaheed minar.
The university authority also chalked out different programmes including discussions, drawing competition, cultural events etc.
The authority of Jagannath University (JnU) observed Ekushe February and International Mother Language Day on the campus in a befitting manner on Saturday. JnU acting Proctor Dr Noor Mohammad inaugurated the programme on behalf of JnU Vice Chancellor, at zero hour by placing floral bouquets at the university Shaheed Minar.
Later, JnU unit other organization including JnU Teachers Asociation (JnUTA), Awami League backed Teachers Association ‘Blue Panel’ and BNP backed Teachers Association ‘White Panel’, JnU Officer’s Association (JnUOA), Bangladesh Chatra League (BCL), Jatiyatabadi Chatra Dal (JCD), Chatra Union, Chatra Front, Chatra Federation, JnU Journalist Association, Badhan (a voluntary blood donor organisation), Debating Society, BNCC, Aabrittee Academy, Rover Scout, Ranger unit of the university separately placed floral bouquets at Shaheed Minar.
Floral bouquets were also placed at the Central Shaheed Minar on Dhaka University area on behalf of Jagannath University, JnU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mizanur Rahman, Treasurer Professor Selim Bhuiyan, Register Engineer Md. Ohidujjaman, Dean of different faculty, Departmental Chairperson, Faculty Members, students and employees of the university were present of this time.
The daylong programme also included hoisting national flag at half-mast a top the university’s administration building, arranging recitation, and singing Ekushe songs.
Southeast University (SEU) paid its deep homage to the martyrs of the historic language movement on the occasion of Amar Ekushey and the International Mother Language Day. A group of teachers, students and officials of SEU, led by the Pro Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Md. Humayun Kabir Chowdhury placed wreaths at the Shaheed Minar at its premises early in the morning on Saturday.
The Department of Bengali Language and Literature and Cultural Club of SEU jointly organized the event, where, among others, Dean (Acting) of SSE Prof Syed Fakhrul Hassan, Chair of the Department of Bengali Language and Literature Dr Rakibul Hassan and Chair and Associate Professor of the Department of English Harunur Rashid Khan were also present.
International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT) joined the entire Bangladeshi nation to observe the “International Mother Language Day” with due spirit, honour and solemnity for paying homage and respect to the language martyrs.
The program started through hoisting of National Flag to half-mast in the morning by Prof Dr M Alimullah Miyan, Vice-Chancellor in presence of faculties, students, officers and staff including entire rank and file of the university community.
