Minister visits proposed site beside CMCH: Land crisis for medical varsity feared

Health Minister Md. Nasim said govt has decided to establish Medical University in Chittagong in the meantime including the formation of rules and regulations pending approval of the parliament only. But the place of the proposed university yet to be ascertained.
He disclosed it while visiting the site of the proposed institution in Chittagong on Monday . Meanwhile Bangladesh Medical Association, Chittagong Chapter and Swadinata Physician Council(Swaship) proposed to establish the said university in the lands of the Chittagong Medical College Hospital but the experts expressed opinion over the proposals of the medical associations.
 The experts says if the proposed medical university is constructed within the campus of existing medical college hospital , then the both institutions will have to face the land crisis in future for the extension of medical institutions.
 They demanded establishment of the proposed university in an spacious open areas of the city . The layout plan of the proposed university was shown to the Health Minister at CMCH auditorium in presence of the Public works Minister Engr. Mosharaf Hossain. Health Minister Md. Nasim attended the National Mourning Day programme at Shah Alam Bir Uttam auditorium of CMCH as arranged by Swadinata Chikishsk Parishad as Chief Guest. A multimedia projection was also exhibited to the minister justifying the upgrading the medical college into medical university .
 Following thelong movement of the physicians and the medical experts, political parties against the upgrading of CMCH into university, later govt decided to establish it in separate spacious land in the city area. President of the Public Health Rights committee Dr. Mahfuzur Rahman said the present CMCH has capacity of 1300 beds which will not be expanded in future if the proposed university is located within the CMCH lands.
He further said the proposed university will start in first phase with 500 beds but it will be impossible to expand more beds in future lack of lands.
 The speakers in the program suggested vacant khas lands in Fouzderhat and Bakalia area in city for establishment of the such a big medical institution , sources said
