Laksham-Chinki Astana double track opens next month

 The construction of 61km long Laksham and Chinki Astana double track has been completed. The project is waiting for inauguration by the Prime Minister in the next January.
Talking to journalists , M Mozammel Huq, General Manager of Bangladesh Railway (East) said, “Bangladesh government and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) jointly provided Tk 15.25 billion for implementation of the project. Of which, Tk 5.97 billion is provided by JICA, while the rest Tk 9.28 billion is provided by the government.”
Track doubling between Laksham and Chinki Astana is a sub-project of Dhaka-Chittagong Railway Development Project.
Eleven railway stations remodelling, four new stations, 10-kilometre loop line, platforms and foot over-bridges have been constructed under the project. The 11 new stations got computerized signalling system along with telecommunications facilities. Besides, eight medium scale bridges, 34 culverts and 11 pipe-culverts have been constructed. There will be the scope for laying broad-gauge lines too.
Bangladesh Railway and Chinese CRM Joint Venture signed a deal on October 17, 2011 to implement the project and the construction work had started in November 2011.
Awami League government in their previous tenure had taken three projects to double the rail track in the significant rail line between Dhaka and Chittagong.
Meanwhile, the construction work of 7.1km long Akhaura-Bhairab Bazar double line is going on full swing. Construction works of second Bhairab Bridge and second Titas Bridge are going on fast. The project has been implementing with funding of Indian Credit.
Besides, another section of Bangladesh Railway, the 72km long rail track from Laksham to Akhaura, has been taken up by the present government to double the track. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and European Investment Bank (EIB) have agreed to finance the project. So, the loan agreement with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and European Investment Bank (EIB) is expected to be signed for the project in January next year.
According to Bangladesh Railway sources, the construction works of 72 km long double rail line will begin from June next and expected to be completed in four years.
The sources said, ADB will provide 505 million US dollar and EIB will provide 175 million US Dollar for the project.
With the implementation of the project, the speed of train on the route would be 120kilometre per hour.
The main objective of this project is to increase the capacity of Rail lines for efficient train operation and to meet fast growing freight and intercity passenger traffic. The improvement will also result in low operating costs for users and increasing the competitiveness of Bangladesh for investment.
Bangladesh Railway has introduced the transportation of containers from Chittagong Port to Kamalapur Inland Container depot since 15 years back.
