Business Desk :
Lafarge Umiam Mining Private Limited (LUMPL), a subsidiary of the leading cement producer LafargeHolcim Bangladesh Limited, won the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Indian Bureau of Mines recently, for the second consecutive year.
The cement producer sources its basic raw materials for its integrated plant at Chhatak in Sylhet from the LUMPL mines situated in the neighbouring Indian State of Meghalaya.
The prestigious award was handed over at a ceremony at the end of the 9th Mine Environment and Mineral Conservation week in Shillong.
While handing over the award LUMPL was cited as a role model for other mining operators in India’s north-eastern region. Indian Government introduced the award to encourage safe mining in the region among the companies.
LUMPL, the LafargeHolcim Bangladesh subsidiary, also won the well-famed Guru Donacharya Award for consistent outstanding achievement in the field of health and safety in mines. The award was given during the 15th North East Metalliferous Mines Safety Week.
It may be mentioned that the Lafarge Umiam mining operation in Meghalaya extracts limestone and dispatches to the plant at Chhatak by a 17 km long cross border belt conveyer to produce clinker and cement.
