A delegation from Asia/Pacific Group on Money Laundering (APG) has expressed grave dissatisfaction at the country’s four vital issues including the procurement rules, says Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith.
“The visiting APG team expresses concern with four issues – government’s procurement policy, gold smuggling and the role of state-owned banks, and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) – in dealing money laundering and terrorist funding.”
The eight-member team headed by David Shannon made the observation during a meeting with the minister in his residence in the capital on Wednesday morning.
Following the meeting Muhith briefed it to journalists saying: “In reply, I have assured the APG team of amending the procurement act soon. Besides, they have taken away the documents related to state-run Sonali Bank and Basic Bank for scrutiny.”
Pointing at the gold smuggling, he said: “The government is yet to take any step against the illegal activities as Bangladesh is being used only as transit. But, we will take effective measures in this regard in the next budget.”
