The Kaptai Lake Development and Marketing Project (KLDMP), a unit of Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation has earned over Tk. 10 crore in 2014-2015 fiscal by netting 8,644.80 metric tons of fish, said Project Director of KLDMP, commander Mainul Hossain.
Largest man-made reservoir in Asia, Kaptai Lake was set up in the 1963-64 period by closing Kaptai dam for generating the lone Karnaphuli Hydro Station (KHS) that created Kaptai Lake displacing millions of people.
Apart from power generation, Kaptai dam paved the way for communication of the people living in the areas surrounded by lake and enhancing pisciculture ensuring supply of protein to people, said the PD.
Besides meeting local demand, fish produced in the sweet water of Kaptai Lake has been playing a vital role in the national economy, Mainul Hossain added.
