Normal sales and transactions of vegetables and other essential goods had been badly affected due to continuous hartal and blockade in last two months. Both wholesalers and retailers said that their sales falling by over 50 percent in these days, they would suffer heavy losses.
Expressing worries at the dull business situation, the wholesale traders of the city’s Karwan Bazar said, “If the situation does not improve, they may be constrained to stop importing vegetables from other districts.”
Kawser Ahmed, a wholesale trader, said that the retailers had stopped coming to Karwan Bazar from distant places of the metropolis affecting business at Kawran Bazar
“Consequently, we are incurring a great loss, and we do not know how long will the uncertainty continue?” He said, if the strike continues, many of us will stop import from other districts.
Abdul Sabur another wholesaler said that he was unable to operate his outlet as supply of lentil, ginger and onion has fallen in Dhaka due to transport problem.
However till yesterday, prices of vegetables except onion and potato at Karwan Bazaar, New Market, Banolota Kancha Bazaar, Sukrabad Kancha Bazaar, Nawabganj Bazaar, Mirpur Section-6, Mirpur Section-1 in the city remained stable.
At Karwan Bazar kitchen market, bean was selling at Tk 30 to 35 per kg, tomato at Tk 20 to 25, tomato green at Tk 20, bitter gourd at Tk 50 to Tk 60, cucumber at Tk 30 to 35, okra at Tk 40 to 50, papaya at Tk 15, potato at Tk 15, carrot at Tk 20, french at Tk 50, snake gourd at Tk 30 to 35, pumpkin (medium size) Tk 40 to 50 per piece, cauliflower Tk 20 to 25, bottle gourd at Tk 40 to 50, ash gourd Tk 20 to 25, coriander leaves at Tk 100 per kg, green chilli at Tk 60 to 70, broccoli at Tk 30 per piece, China cabbage at Tk 35, buah bit at 50 per kg, at capsicum (red) at Tk 300 kg and capsicum (green) at Tk 200 to 220 per kg.
Beef was selling at Tk 350 per kg at Shantipur, South Goran, an increase of Tk 20, while red meat at Tk 500, a medium size of local cock at Tk 400 to 550 per piece and hen at Tk 300 to 340. The boiler chickens’ price stands at Tk 165 per kg, egg (chicken) was selling at Tk 32 per hali (4 pieces) and egg (duck) at Tk 38 to Tk 40.
Of fish prices, Puti was selling at Tk 250 per kg at Karwan Bazar, Kholisa at Tk 300,
Chapila at Tk 400, local Koi at Tk 600, Fali Chanda (Rupchada) at Tk 1200, Chanda (small) at Tk 250, Cheh at Tk 450, walking fish at Tk 350, Eel at Tk 450, Meni at Tk 400, sheat at Tk 600 to 800 per kg, Ek-thota (Kaitta fish) at Tk 550, Coral Fish at 550, Pangas at Tk 700, cultivated Pangas at Tk 170, Rajputi at Tk 450, Tilapia at Tk 180, Ruhit at Tk 350 per kg, medium size katol at Tk 250-300 a kg, big size katol at Tk 400 per kg, cultivated climbing fish at Tk 250 per kg, local variety of Cat fish (Shing) at Tk 500-900, barbel at Tk 800 per kg, big size shrimp at Tk 800-1000 and small shrimp at Tk 350-400 per kg.
On Friday, the coarse rice was selling at Tk 36 to 38 per kg, pyjam at Tk 37 to Tk 39, Nazishail brand of rice at Tk 50 to 56, Minicate at Tk 52-54, Pillau rice (Badsha bhog) at Tk 80 to Tk 100 and Kalojira at Tk 100 to Tk 115 only. Course flour at Tk40 per kg and 2 kg packet at Tk 75,
Five litres of Rupchanda brand canned soybean oil was selling at Tk 490 to Tk 505. New varieties of onion were selling at Tk 42 to 45 per kg, and imported onion at Tk 38. Imported garlic was selling at Tk 90 to 100 per kg and local one at Tk 80. Imported ginger was selling at Tk 110 to 130, local produce at Tk 80 to Tk 90 only, lentil at Tk 130 and mash at Tk 110 kg only. Plum sells at Tk 40 to 60 per kg.
