Killing of a businessman in city

AMIDST the rising number of killings across the country without law enforcers’ ‘knowledge’, killing of a businessman by gun shoot in the city’s high-security Banani area by an unidentified assailants on Tuesday has exposed how insecure businessmen and city dwellers are in their daily life. It also proves government’s utter failure to provide minimum safety to ordinary citizens. The perennial failure of the law enforcers in providing safety and security to citizens embarks to rethink the ability, motivation, and necessity of a huge number of policemen in the country. How four assailants on Tuesday evening can enter an overseas recruitment agency office and safely fled away after shooting at four, including the agency owner who died on the spot.
We see police are not serious to their prime duties while hundreds of them are deployed for protection of ministers, MPs and politically important persons and guarding their homes. Public protection is not on priority to them. Even Inspector General of Police (IGP) few weeks ago said while police are deployed on duty, protecting each and every one is difficult. But needless to say muggers and other anti-social elements are taking lives every day and the IGP’s word in defense of police can’t exonerate police failure. We want commitment to fight crime, which is however missing. In many cases police are complicit to crime.
Definitely, the recurring incident of impunity and to say that police are helplessness is giving criminals the advantage to carry out crimes. Moreover politically instigated crimes can’t be deterred unless political leaders at all levels come out to discourage it. Most killings are taking place under the shelter of politically powerful persons who remain beyond the reach of the rule of law. Lawlessness is gripping the nation and killing of a trader at the city’s most secured residential district amply suggests loopholes in the security shield.
Only last week, at least eight people, including a teenage boy, were killed in Kishoreganj, Faridpur, and Comilla. Three siblings and two others were killed and over 50 others injured in a clash between two rival groups of ruling Awami League and main opposition BNP. In Faridpur, two siblings were hacked to death. In Comilla, police recovered the decomposed body of a 14-year-old from a septic tank in his school. The sudden rise in crimes denotes that breaking down of law and order and it must be improved by all means.
Law enforcement agencies always claimed that they would do whatever it takes to arrest and prosecute the criminals; but they could not arrest real criminals. In some cases, they intentionally don’t want where ruling party interest dominates.
We must say police and other law enforcement agencies are public servants to maintain the law and order situation under control. Their failure comes often at the cost of people’s life. Such lawlessness must be sternly dealt with.
