The government leaders denied the allegations brought in a report of the US Department of State about violation of human rights in Bangladesh, saying no members of security forces have been given impunity. They further claim that actions have been taken against every person liable after investigation in each of such incidents. The recent US Department of State report said, “There were reports of widespread impunity for security force abuses and corruption. The government took few measures to investigate and prosecute cases of corruption and abuse and killing by the security forces.”
The government denied allegations but incidents of death in police custody, torture during investigation, killing in crossfire were widespread and not unknown to our people. The purpose was to create panic among people about safety of their lives to keep everybody silent about the illegalities of the government. These crimes are routinely done under all regimented governments and agencies responsible for such dangerous crimes have to be given immunity. Only after a change government to be people’s government the whole ugly and truths come out. So the change of such governments is very difficult without bloodbath. Those who do these crimes desperately defend the existing government for their own safety. So the killers are helpful to the government two ways.
The police must not be killers and that must be taken seriously whether in crossfire or not. The police are for protection of life and safety.
Recently Md Razu, the main accused in the murder of Cumilla journalist Mohiuddin Sarker allegedly killed by RAB claiming to be in crossfire.
According to locals, Razu from Bishnupur village in Panchthubi union of Cumilla’s Adarsha sadar upazila had a motorcycle business. But, he allegedly used to trade drugs behind this identity. He was also accused in several cases. Journalist Mohiuddin Sarker was shot to death in Haidrabad bordering area adjacent to Shankuchail in Rajapur union of Burichang upazila, Cumilla. It is not denied many crimes committed by those who claim to be journalist.
We find no justification in crossfire killing of the accused even if he was not a journalist. The police catch the criminal alive for legal proceeding.
