INDIAN External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted on Friday that kidney has no religious label. She made this emotional remark while thanking a Muslim man who offered to donate his kidney to her for transplantation. Scores of people including Muslims have offered to donate kidney to the 64-year-old Sushma Swaraj who is undergoing tests for surgery transplantation at a hospital in Delhi and on the lookout for a suitable donor. She has been flooded with wishes from politicians cutting across party lines as well as from a cross section of society. It proves her reputation as a charming personality and as a person of versatile connection. We also wish her a successful transplantation and early recovery.
Indeed by thanking the offer Sushma Swaraj has displayed her humane out look and sagacity to remind all that human organs have no religion. Donors of blood, kidney, cornea etc. have been playing a vital role in modern treatment baskets. The religious or ethnic identity of the donor or the receiver does not matter anything in this regard. Innumerable patients throughout the world are beneficiaries of this process. So Sushma Swaraj did not tell anything new. As an individual, every human being is integral part of one human race, more or less similar to each other physically, psychologically and emotionally. Religious identity has nothing to do in it and we believe her outlook will help others to come out of religion based parochial mentality.
But the paradox is that we are also used to separate ourselves in the name of religion in real life. Sushma Swaraj is a well-known political personality and she is not above. She is one of the central figures of Sangha Parivar now ruling India. As a BJP leader, which uses Hinduttwa as the main political ingredient of the party. It is indeed so rigid about religious orthodoxy and she is also committed to it. Its policies does not feel restraint to discriminate others in democratic India. The party’s belief is often conflicting with the safety and dignity of other human beings of other religious, which is really disturbing.
We must however say like kidney has no religion; Indian bullets should not also kill our people in the border. Sectarian attitude of India and more so of her party is pulling India back in many respects. Being a liberal humanist Sushma Swaraj even could not come out of it. However we hope her new realization may help open new horizon to help others to think so to end hatred and discrimination based on religious orthodoxy from all quarters.
