Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Advocate Zainul Abedin has said BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was admitted to the hospital for her treatment after the High Court’s direction. But she was transferred to the jail on Thursday without any notice, which he termed as ‘contempt of court.’
“It is contempt of court to transfer Khaleda Zia to the jail from the hospital in spite of the clear direction of the High Court to keep her in the hospital. It seems that the government is trying to kill her without any treatment,” he said while speaking at a press briefing on the Supreme Court Bar premises yesterday.
The SCBA organized the briefing in protest against the transfer of BNP chief to the jail from the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).
SCBA Secretary Barrister A M Mahbub Uddin Khokan and other Bar leaders were present on the occasion.
The SCBA President announced that they would organize a grand rally on the Supreme Court premises on November 17 demanding independence of the judiciary, democracy and rule of law, and release of Khaleda Zia.
“Khaleda Zia was admitted to the BSMMU with the direction of the High Court. But she was never allowed to meet with her lawyers for a single time there. Even her relatives and the party men were also not allowed to meet her during this time. On November 6, we submitted an application to meet with her, but the authorities did not accept our application yet,” Advocate Zainul said.
The SCBA President said, “The government is trying to kill her without any treatment. So, anxiety has been grown in the mind of the lawyers and the common people of the country. It is doubtful in this situation whether the Parliament election would be fair.”
SCBA Vice-President Golam Mostofa and Golam Rahman Bhuiyan, Barrister A K M Ehsanur Rahman, Advocate Ahsan Ullah and some other pro-BNP lawyers were also present at the briefing.
