Zia Orphanage case: Khaleda’s plea for re-investigation rejected

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court yesterday upheld a High Court order that rejected a petition of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia seeking order for partial re-investigation in the Zia Orphanage Graft case.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order hearing on a leave to appeal filed
by Khaleda Zia challenging the High Court order.
Anti-Corruption Commission’s lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan told newsmen now there is no legal bar for the sub-ordinate court to start the trial proceedings in the case filed against the former Prime Minister and others.
The High Court on March 9 rejected Khaleda Zia’s petition seeking its order for a fresh probe into a portion of Zia Orphanage Graft case. Before that, on March 1, Khaleda Zia submitted the petition with the High Court.
In the petition, she appealed to the court for staying the trial proceedings of the case and to issue a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why the lower court’s rejection order should not be declared illegal.
The ACC filed the case with Ramna Model Police Station on July 3, 2008 accusing Khaleda Zia, her son Tarique Rahman and four others for misappropriating over Tk 2.10 crore that was received as grants for orphans from a foreign bank.
Other four accused persons are former BNP MP Kazi Salimul Haque, businessperson Sharfuddin Ahmed, Khaleda Zia’s former Principal Secetary Kamal Uddin Siddique and former Psresident Ziaur Rahman’s nephew Momenur Rahman.
