Staff Reporter :BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s motorcade came under attack for the fourth consecutive day on Wednesday. The ruling party men allegedly attacked the motorcade in city’s Bangla Motor area during her city election campaign like in the three days.At least 10 people, including BNP Chairperson’s adviser Abdul Quayum and two personal security staff, were injured in the attack. Of the injured, Khaleda Zia’s security staff Lt (Retd) Samiul Islam, Atiqul Islam and driver Mannan were admitted to a city hospital. However, Khaleda Zia remained unhurt in the incident. She was campaigning for her party-backed Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayoral candidate Mirza Abbas. Witnesses and BNP leaders said, a group of leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of the ruling Awami League, armed with sticks and bricks attacked the motorcade at about 5:30 pm. They also threw brickbats at the motorcade. The motorcade stopped at the traffic signal. The assault came when it started to move on green light. They also said that, BCL central leaders Moshiur Rahman Rubel and Mamun Ahmed led the attack. But BCL central organising secretary Mashiur Rahman said that they did not attack on the motorcade. “The car of Khaleda Zia’s CSF and motorcycles of BNP men were driven towards us. Four Chhattra League activists were injured at that time.’ He also said that Chhattra League activists were campaigning for Sayeed Khokon, mayoral candidate for the DSCC. The attackers beat up Khaleda Zia’s security men and damaged their vehicles. At one stage, the BNP chief’s vehicle hurriedly left the scene towards the Nayapaltan central office of her party. But her vehicle’s rear glass got badly damaged. BNP Vice Chairman Selima Rahman was with the party chief. Later, Khaleda Zia took position at the central office.The motorcade of Khaleda Zia came under attack thrice earlier — on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday — during her electioneering for the BNP-backed candidates in city corporation elecions in Dhaka North and Dhaka South.On Tuesday, the ruling party men attacked the motorcade of Khaleda Zia by hurling brickbats and stones towards it in the city’s Fakirapool area. On Monday, her motorcade came under attack at Kawran Bazar. The motorcade under attack also on Sunday at Uttara. Following the yesterday’s attack, senior BNP leaders and pro-BNP professionals’ electoral platform Adarsha Dhaka Andolon leaders rushed to the BNP office and sat in an emergency meeting to work out the next course of action. Khaleda was staying at her chamber on 1st floor of the office.
