Zia Trust case: Khaleda’s bail extended

The Special Judge Court-5 of Dhaka yesterday (Monday) extended the bail of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia until June 28 in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case.
Judge Dr Md Akhteruzzaman of the special judge court handed down the order and fixed the new date on Monday. The court also withdrew a production warrant against Khaleda Zia.
However, she was not produced before the court as she is ill, said her lawyer Sanaullah Miah.
Earlier, on May 10, the court extended bail of Begum Khaleda Zia until June 4 in this graft case.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the Zia Charitable Trust graft case with Tejgaon Model Police Station on August 8, 2011, accusing Khaleda Zia and three others of abusing power to raise funds for the Zia Trust from unknown sources.
The other accused persons are- Harris Chowdhury, Political Secretary of the former Premier Khaleda Zia between 2001 and 2006; Ziaul Islam Munna, Assistant Private Secretary (APS) to Harris; Monirul Islam Khan, APS of former Dhaka city mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka.
On April 22, the same court extended Khaleda Zia’s bail until May 10 in the graft case. On February 8, the special judge court convicted the former Prime Minister and sentenced her to five years’ imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.
