Court Correspondent :
Another complaint case was filed on Tuesday morning against BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and her party’s Standing Committee member Goyeshwar Chandra Roy on the charge of making defamatory remarks about the number of martyrs in the War of Liberation of 1971.
Advocate AB Siddiqui, President of Bangabandhu Jananetri Parishad, filed the case with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka. Magistrate Mohammad Aminul Islam heard the
complaint and directed the Officer-in-Charge of Shahbagh Police Station to investigate the matter and submit a report on February 7.
The complainant stated that Khaleda Zia and Goyeshwar attempted to distort the history of Bangladesh with their derogatory statements about the number of martyrs. On December 21, last year, the BNP Chief raised questions about the accuracy of the number of martyrs of 1971. She claimed that the official figure of three million martyrs was controversial.
Moreover, without mentioning the name of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, she claimed, he [Bangabandhu] did not want independence, but wanted to be Pakistan’s Prime Minister.
Similarly, BNP leader Goyeshwar Chandra Roy on December 25 described the 1971 martyred intellectuals as “anti-liberation elements” who “died like fools”. They drew their salaries and allowances from Pakistan Government up to the end of the war. Supporting Khaleda, he also called upon the government to determine the “real” number of martyrs during the Liberation War.
