Zia Trust cases: Khaleda won’t appear in court due to illness today

BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia will not appear in the Special Judge’s Court-3 of Dhaka on Thursday in the Zia Charitable Trust and Zia Orphanage Trust graft cases due to her illness.
Khaleda Zia’s lawyer Sanaullah Mia told newsmen on Wednesday that the BNP leader would not go to the court as she is still ill. Earlier, the court set December 10 for cross-examination of the witnesses and recording the
depositions of more witnesses.
So far, 25 witnesses testified in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case. Besides, the court kept the hearing in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case adjourned, as appeal of the defence for ‘leave to appeal’ is yet to be settled at the High Court Division.
The ACC filed the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case on July 3, 2008 with Ramna Model Police Station against Khaleda Zia, her sdon Tarique Rahman and four others for embezzling more than Tk 2.10 crore, which was received from abroad as grants for orphans.
While the ACC filed the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case with Tejgaon Police Station, accusing four people, including Khaleda Zia, of abusing power in raising funds for the trust from unknown sources on August 8, 2011.
