BSS, Chittagong :
Information Minister Hasanul Hoque Inu yesterday said three bizarre theories evolved by the BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia puzzled the nation.
“The three theories – declaration of the independence by Ziaur Rahman, Khaleda’s birthday celebration on August 15 and the latest first president theory-have stunned the nation”, the minister said.
The information minister said Khaleda Zia through these three peculiar theories is trying to halt the advancement of non- communal forces in the country.
Inu made a clarion call for resisting strings of propaganda and falsehood in political market.
The minister said this while addressing the inaugural function of the biennial conference of the Chittagong Union of Journalists (CUJ) at Engineer Abdul Khalek auditorium of Chittagong Press Club (CPC).
Addressing the function as the chief guest, Inu said Khaleda has taken the position of the political umbrella of militancy and communalism.
“Begum Zia being former prime minister now stands for disgraceful distortion of history, protecting the war criminals and Jamaat in line with Pakistan-type of political ideology,” he said.
“The whole country calls for banning Jamaat but she does not want it. She does not want the trial of the war criminals and the killers of Father of the Nation”, he added. He said Khaleda observed silence inside her residence while the crores of people simultaneously sang the national anthem on the Independence Day.
Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) president Manzurul Ahsan Bulbul inaugurated the function while CUJ president Shahidul Alam presided over it.
Secretary general of BFUJ Abdul Jalil Bhuiyan, joint- secretary general Saiful Islam Talukdar, treasurer Khairuzzaman Kamal, Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) president Altaf Mahmud, general secretary (GS) Quddus Afrad, Editor of the daily Azadi MA Malek, former managing director and chief editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Azizul Islam Bhuiyan, publisher of the daily Muktabani Bobita Barua, former president of CUJ M Nasirul Hoque, GS of CUJ Reaz Haidar Chowdhury, joint-secretary M Shamsul Islam, CPC GS Mohsin Chowdhury, among others, spoke.
Terming the mass media as the mirror of democracy, the Inu said the mass media as well as democracy of a country gets shrunk off when there is no freedom of the press. “It is the duty of both the government and journalists to keep this mirror clear in order to properly reflect the society”, he added.
