President of Supreme Court Bar Association Khandker Mahbub Hossain on Tuesday said BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will appear at the court if she is provided with adequate securities and assurance to get back to her office.
Talking to the journalists at his office, he said, “We are respectful of law. Though we are yet to receive the copy of arrest warrant, Khaleda Zia will surrender before the court if required.”
But the government should provide the BNP Chairperson with adequate securities and the assurance that she can return to her Gulshan office after appearing at the court, he said.
Mahbub, also an adviser to the BNP Chairperson, is also of the opinion that the court could not issue arrest warrant against Khaleda as her no-confidence petition is pending with the higher court.
“We have moved a no-confidence petition against the trial court. It is pending with the higher court. The court legally and ethically cannot issue arrest warrant against the BNP Chairperson at this stage until the disposal of our petition,” he said.
Regarding the security of Khaleda Zia, he said the BNP Chairperson feels insecured as the leaders of ruling party are besieging her office everyday.
Mahbub also said he had discussed the issue with Khaleda, who has been staying at her Gulshan office since January 3.
“She apprehends that once she comes out of her Gulshan office, she would not be able to go there again. The government will try to make her politically isolated,” he said.
The court earlier issued arrest warrant against Khaleda on February 25 as she continuously refrained from appearing before the court in the two graft charges.
The BNP Chairperson is facing the charge of misappropriation of money from two charity organizations -Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust.
