Voice vote: Khaleda, Tarique’s re-election approved

Staff Reporter :Councillors of the BNP have approved through voice votes Khaleda Zia and her elder son Tarique Rahman as chairperson and senior vice-chairman of the party respectively in the sixth council held at in city’s Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) on Saturday. During the indoor session of the council, BNP Standing Committee member and Chief Election Commissioner Barrister Jamir Uddin Sircar placed the poll results before around 3,000 councillors. The councillors later endorsed both Khaleda Zia and Tarique unanimously.Earlier on March 6, Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman were elected unopposed, as nobody picked up nomination papers for the two key posts.Meanwhile, the councillors also empowered Khaleda Zia to pick the other office-bearers and members for the national executive committee and the standing committee.BNP Standing Committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain placed a proposal to the councillor to give the power so that the BNP chief could form the national executive committee and the standing committee. The councillors passed the proposal unanimously. The BNP chief may take time to announce the names of new central committee and standing committee members. The full-fledged committees would be announced two or three weeks later, sources said.The councillors also passed several other proposals and amendments to the party’s constitution. The council ended through concluding speech of the BNP chief after 9:00 PM. The council was inaugurated after 10:00 AM.
