Khaleda, Tarique’s nomination papers submitted

The nomination papers of Khaleda Zia and her eldest son Tarique Rahman to contest the election to the posts of BNP chairperson and vice chairman respectively were submitted on Friday.
Khaleda and Tarique are set to retain their current posts unopposed as no one else filed nomination as their rivals. Election agents of Khaleda and Tarique submitted the nomination papers on their behalf to the returning officer at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.
Khaleda’s agent and BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi submitted the nomination paper
to party returning officer and its standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan around 11:20am. Assistant returning officer and Dhaka district unit BNP president Abdul Mannan was also present.
Later, Tarique’s election agent and party’s another joint secretary general Mohammad Shahjahan submitted the nomination paper to the returning officers around 12:05pm. Tarique, who was made party’s senior vice-chairman in its fifth national council, has been living in London since September 11, 2008 after being released from jail on parole.
Earlier, on Wednesday, both Rizvi and Shahjahan collected nomination papers for the duo to the contest the polls. According to the election schedule, aspirants for chairperson and senior vice-chairman posts have to submit their nomination papers on Friday.The nomination papers will be scrutinised on Saturday.
The time for the withdrawal of nomination is 10am to 4pm on Sunday. If the duo does not withdraw their nomination or their candidatures are not cancelled during the scrutiny, they will be elected unopposed before the polls billed for March 19. Khaleda Zia has been holding the party chairperson’s post since 1984.
