Khaleda seeks bail from apex court in Charitable case

BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia on Thursday filed an appeal petition with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court seeking bail in the Zia Charitable Trust case in which she was jailed for seven years.
The HC Bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice S M Kuddus Zaman on July 31 this year rejected her bail in the case considering the gravity of the offence mentioned in the case.
Khaleda Zia filed the petition against that rejection order of the High Court Division through her lawyer, said Barrister Kayser Kamal, one of the lawyers of the BNP Chairperson. In the petition, Khaleda said, she has been suffering from different diseases including diabetes and dental problem.
A special court in Dhaka on October 29, 2018 convicted Khaleda in connection with the Zia Charitable Trust case and sentenced her to seven-year rigorous imprisonment.
On November 18, 2018, Khaleda Zia filed an appeal with the High Court challenging the lower court verdict and sought acquittal in the case. At the same time, she filed a bail petition in the case which was rejected by HC on July 31 this year.
The Anti-Corruption Commission filed the Zia Charitable Trust case against Khaleda, Harris Chowdhury, Ziaul Haque Manna and Monirul with Tejgaon police station on August 8, 2011.
