As part of her plan to bring a momentum in the anti-government movement in the upcoming days, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is now trying to activate the Dhaka city unit committee of the party and the front bodies.
According to party insiders, the BNP chief is not happy with the present convening committee of the city unit, as it has failed to form the full-fledged committee in time. It also failed to play an active role on the streets.
The city committee was announced four months ago following the failure of the previous committee led by Sadek Hossain Khoka.
In this backdrop, Khaleda Zia wants to activate the city committee as well as the youth fronts, particularly Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.
She asked the leaders of the city committee to complete their tasks as soon as possible. Expressing her frustration over the poor performance, she also asked the city unit convener Mirza Abbas to leave the post if they can’t play proper role.
Meanwhile, Mirza Abbas and other leaders of the committee have become active following the party chief’s unhappiness over the activities of the new committee, party insiders said. They are working to activate the leaders and workers of the city unit to take them to the streets against the ruling Awami League.
BNP standing committee member Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, who is also a joint convener
of the city committee, said that although they have not formed the full-fledged committee till now, they already completed committees of different thanas and wards. They will complete their tasks as soon as possible.
Goyeshwar, however, said that Khaleda Zia is now planning to launch a decisive movement that will ultimately ensure downfall of the government. For this reason, she is endeavouring to activate the party and its front bodies, he added.
Farid Uddin Ahmed, a member of the city committee, told The New Nation that Mirza Abbas and other leaders are now working seriously to form the full-fledged committee alongside with thana and ward committees.
In the meantime, Khaleda Zia also wants to activate the Juba Dal, the JCD and other front bodies. She believes that vital role of the front bodies is a must to gear up the street movement. She wants reshuffle of Juba Dal and also formation of new committees of different JCD units as soon as possible.
Some JCD leaders said that the central committee of the organisation is now working to form its committees at Dhaka University and some other important city units considering the upcoming street movement.
Saidur Rahman, a leader of the DU unit of JCD, said that the Dhaka University committee is likely to be announced soon. “Madam (Khaleda Zia) and our central committee want a strong DU unit, as they believe that the university can play a vital role in the anti-government movement,” he said.
