The teachers of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) have opposed the appointment of new Vice-Chancellor Professor Khaleda Ekram just three days of her appointment.
They urged the government to reconsider the decision of the appointment. Otherwise, they said, the teachers will launch a tough movement soon.
The teachers blamed that Professor Khaleda Ekram was appointed as VC violating the seniority of the university which will create bad impact in the university’s overall academic activities.
President of BUET Teachers’ Association Professor Zoynul Abedin, after a general meeting of the association on Saturday said that the teachers were ‘frustrated’ and ‘angered’ at the appointment of Professor Khaleda Ekram as BUET VC.
He said, “We can launch a movement now against the decision. But we have to think about the academic
activities of the university. Admission test for the 2014-15 session is coming up, so we won’t go for any agitation programme now. But we will launch a tough programme after the admission test if the government does not meet our demand. We hope that our request will be considered.”
Leaders of the teachers’ association said BUET VCs are appointed on seniority basis.
Professor Khaleda Ekram, Professor of Architect Department, will replace outgoing VC Prof Nazrul Islam, whose term ended on August 31.
She is the first female VC in the nation’s leading engineering university. The only other and the first ever public university to have a female vice-chancellor is Jahangirnagar University.
Khaleda Ekram joined BUET in October, 1975, and became a full Professor in April, 1995.
President Abdul Hamid, also Chancellor of the university, appointed Prof Khaleda Ekram, as its first woman vice chancellor on September 11 for a four-year term.
