BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has urged the government to do the politics of the national unity, and not of revenge, as her party does it.
Speaking at a discussion on Tuesday, the BNP chief reiterated the demand of arranging a fresh election under a non-party government system. She said that the election under a non-party neutral government is needed for the sake of the country and the democracy. “We want change through the democratic way. The people also want change. Arrange a fresh election accepting the peoples’ demand. We ensure you that we will not repeat the behavior that we received from you (ruling Awami League),” she said.
The BNP arranged the discussion in the Institution of Diploma Engineers in the city on the occasion its 37th founding anniversary. Khaleda Zia chaired the function, while the party’s senior leaders Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Lt General (retd) Mahbubur Rahman, Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar, ASM Hannan Shah, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdullah Al Noman, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Shah Moazzem Hossain, among others, spoke it.
Earlier this morning, Khaleda Zia along with leaders and workers of the her party paid homage to the party’s founder and slain President Ziaur Rahman by placing wreaths at his grave in the city. They also offered Fateha and prayed for the salvation of his departed soul.
Leaders and workers of different units and associate bodies of the party also laid wreaths at the grave of Ziaur Rahman.
They celebrated the day with various programmes across the country. On the occasion, BNP flag was hoisted atop all the offices of BNP, including Nayapaltan central office, across the country in the early morning.
Talking to the reporters after paying homage to the grave of Ziaur Rahman, BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed said the ruling party might opt for elections soon. He said the government seemed to be in an uncomfortable state.
He said that Ziaur Rahman established multi-party democracy in the country by removing the one-party rule. “But the democratic system established by the BNP founder
is now lost. Restoration of the democracy in the country is now a big challenge,” he said.
He said that BNP would return to power and thus democracy will be restored.
