Khalek won the election with a big margin defeating his nearest rival BNP contestant Nazurul Islam Manju. Speaking at the event, the Prime Minister asked the newly elected mayor and councillors to work sincerely for the wellbeing of the people irrespective of political identity and views. “When you work as public representatives, you must take care of the wellbeing of people,” she said adding there are also representatives from BNP and other parties alongside AL’s representatives here.
Sheikh Hasina said the government is making allocations for development programmes in the interest and wellbeing of people, not considering any political identity. “No matter what party you belong to. Since people voted you, you (elected representatives) must serve people… we believe in balanced development. People are most important to me and our goal is to ensure their overall welfare,” she said. Hasina said the Awami League government has been carrying out massive development activities across whole country since it assumed power, which helped Bangladesh to be graduated to a developing country now from the least developed country category.
