Death row convict Jamaat leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman has told his counsels that he would first file the review petition after release of the full verdict by the Supreme Court and then take decision regarding presidential clemency.
Kamaruzzaman’s counsel Shishir Monir told journalists about the decision of his client after meeting him (Kamaruzzaman) at Dhaka Central Jail on Thursday.
A four-member team of defence lawyers met Mohammad Kamaruzzaman at the Central Jail in the morning.
“The Law Minister ordered the jail authorities to take preparation for execution of Kamaruzzaman. But, no such order came from the Supreme Court. There is no scope for implementing the execution prior to the SC’s order. The Law Minister’s decision is against the law,” said Shishir.
Kamaruzzaman’s counsel categorically said that the law minister couldn’t order the jail authorities to be ready for executing the verdict.
“Law Minister’s speech ordering the jail authorities for taking preparation of executing Kamaruzzaman’s verdict is not acceptable as we have not filed review petition. If it is done so it will violate the rules of Supreme Court,” he added.
Regarding the Attorney General’s observation that the prison authorities can implement the execution on the short copy of the SC verdict, he said, “The copy of full verdict will be submitted with the review petition. If not, then, where from we’ll get the full verdict?”
The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the death sentence of Kamaruzzaman awarded to him by War Crimes Tribunal -2 in 2013 for his crimes against humanity during country’s Liberation War in 1971.
He was found guilty in 3rd and 4th charge brought against him for mass killing at Sohagpur village of Sherpur district and murder of one Golam Mostafa.
