Jute harvesting begins in Netrakona

Harvesting of Jute has started in most of the areas of Netrakona district during the current week. Jute growers of the district and crop specialists of the district agriculture extension department (DAED) are expecting satisfactory production of jute this year after seeing better yielding rate of the Jute which is popularly known as “golden fiber” of the country.
The DAED office sources here said, the yielding rate of different varieties of the harvested jute was found 7.30 to eight bales per hectare of the land.
A total of 5,371 hectares of land were brought under the jute cultivation in ten upazilas of the district exceeding the jute cultivation target fixed at 5,361 hectares this year.
The current year’s jute production target was fixed at 45,798 bales in the district, the sources said adding that the production of the jute would be higher than the yearly production target as the farmers could bring additional ten hectares of land crossing the jute cultivation target, the sources said. Talking to the BSS correspondent, the deputy director of the DAED Netrakona Samir Kumar Sarker said that many jute growers in the district showed their keen interest for cultivating jute this year as they got fair prices of the Jute last year side by side with financial and logistic support by different state -run agencies including BADC, BCIC and agriculture department following directives of the government.
