Jute cultivation progressing in Jamalpur

Jute cultivation in the district is progressing this Kharip-1 season.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said till Wednesday farmer cultivated jute on 2778 hectares of land.
The Agriculture office sources said target of jute cultivation was fixed on 36760 hectares of land in the district this year.
Of the land 3862 hectares in Jamalpur sadar,4195 hectares in Sarishabari,2680 hectares in Melandaha,11591 hectares in Islampur,6465 hectares in Dewanganj,5102 hectares in Madarganj and 2865 hectares in Bakshiganj upazila. The official said farmers will cultivate four varieties of jute like 3320 hectares local variety, 32320 hectares tosha, 70 hectares Mesta and 1050 hectares Kenaf variety.
The Agriculture Department said most of the farmers sow JRO-524 variety Tosha seed in their fields. Beside they sow CVL-1, CVL-3, D-154, O-9897, HC-2 and HC-95 varieties jute seed.
However, Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) has allotted 13 Metric Tons (MT) jute seed for Jamalpur and Sherpur district this current season.
The seeds are 8 MT local CVL-1, 2 MT O-9897 and 3 MT BADC-1.
Deputy Director, BADC (Seed Marketing), Md Reazul Islam Tutul said the quality jute seeds were sold among the farmers through 340 registered dealers in the two districts.
Additonal Depty Director (Crop), Muhammad Nuruzzaman said farmers have started sowing jute seed in their empty land. He said some farmers will sow jute seed after harvesting others crops.
