UNB, Dhaka :
Newly appointed German Ambassador in Dhaka Dr Thomas Prinz on Thursday said Germany will continue to assist Bangladesh to reach its goal of becoming a middle-income country by 2021.
He said Bangladesh has tremendous potentials to grow with the dynamic business community, ambitious and creative youth and the entrepreneurial spirit of its people, according to a German Embassy press release.
The envoy said worker’s rights, fair wages and a safe working environment are preconditions to a sustainable business model and for the important step ahead of achieving Bangladesh’s goal.
The Ambassador said he is looking forward to further strengthening mutual cooperation between the two countries during his tenure in Bangladesh.
He presented his credentials to President M Abdul Hamid on Wednesday and emphasized the long-lasting ties between Bangladesh and Germany.
“Germany has been among the first countries to recognise Bangladesh’ s independence after 1971. Since then, our two countries have had close political and economic relations,” he said.
Bangladesh and Germany have a trade volume of more than 4.5 billion Euros per year.
Since 1972, Germany has contributed more than 2 billion Euros to Bangladesh in the area of Development Cooperation.
During the last government’s negotiations in 2014, Germany had pledged 211 million Euros, the highest commitment ever since.
“The funds will be made available in the three priority areas – renewable energies and energy efficiency, good governance, rule of law, human rights and adaptation to climate change in urban areas,” he said.
