JU Correspondent :
Jahangirnagar University Teachers Association (JUTA) on Friday besieged the administrative building demanding the cancelation of Friday’s Senate meeting which decreased the retirement age of JU teachers from 67 to 65.
The university authority has decided to decrease the retirement age of JU teachers after one year of their decision of increasing the age as the government didn’t approve it. Around hundred teachers from different departments under JUTA took position in front of Senate Hall Room locking the door of the hall for two hours.
Later, JUTA withdrew their besieged programme after a meeting of JUTA representatives with the VC on assurance that the university would honor 11 teachers who served for extra one year after their retirement. JU senate will withdraw its earlier decision of increasing the retirement age of two years in the meeting, sources said.
JUTA President Prof Khabir Uddin said, “We urged the authority to suspend the Friday’s Senate meeting and will take a decision of retirement age after a general meeting with the university teachers.
JU VC Prof Farzana Islam said, “We reduce the retirement age as the government didn’t approve it, how we would pay the salary of extra 2 year if the government didn’t pay us.
Earlier, on 3 May 2014, JU Senate increased the retirement age of the teachers from 65 to 67 years. The decision of age increasing for teachers’ retirement was also approved by the JU Syndicate meeting on March 22, 2014.
