JUTA besieges admin bldg over age-limit

Jahangirnagar University Teachers Association (JUTA) on Friday besieged the administrative building demanding the cancelation of Friday’s senate meeting which decreased the retirement age of JU teachers from 67 to 65.
The university authority has decided to decrease the retirement age of JU teachers after one year of their decision of increasing the age as the government didn’t approve it.
Around hundred teachers from different department under the JUTA took the position in front of senate hall room locking the door of the hall for two hours.
Later, JUTA withdrew their besieged programme after a negotiation meeting of JUTA representatives and VC after the assurance of JU VC that university would honored 11 teachers who served for extra one year after their retirement, at around 5:30 pm the senate meeting was started in one and a half hours delayed after a negotiation meeting of JUTA representatives and VC.
JU senate will withdraw its earlier decision of increasing the retirement age of two years in this meeting, sources said.
JUTA President Prof. Khabir Uddin said, “We urged the authority to suspend the Friday’s senate meeting and to take the decision of retirement age after a general meeting with the university teachers.
JU VC Prof. Farzana Islam said, “We force to reduce the retirement age as the Government didn’t approve it, how we would pay the salary of extra 2 year if the government didn’t pay us.
Earlier, on 3 May 2014 JU senate increased the retirement age of the teachers from 65 to 67 years. The decision of increasing age limit for teachers’ retirement was also approved by the JU syndicate meeting held on March 22, 2014.
The senate meeting was underway till filing this report at 6:30 pm.
