Jungle pirates beaten fishermen , looted fishing nets

As many as 9 fishermen were injured and one fisherman named Jahangir Hossain Hawladar (50) was drowned in the Bay of Bengal near the Fair buoy No.1on Tuesday midnight when they were attacked by a gang of armed jungle pirates, according to a report received here. The jungle pirates looted 30 pieces (hilsa) fishing nets worth Tk.10 Lakh from the fishermen. The injured fishermen were admitted to Sharankhola Upazila Health Complex on Wednesday night for their treatment. All those fishermen hail from Dakkhin Rjapur, Uttar Tafalbari, Jhilbunia, Purbo Khada etc. villages under Sharankhola Upazila in Bagerhat district. The injured fishermen are Ful Mia (37), Robi ((19), Sahodeb (50), Badal (27), Afzal (55), Riadul (48), Abu Saleh (30), Monir Khan (26) and Helal Khan (18).
Md.Mizan Majhi, driver of fishing trawler FB. Suman belonging to one Kamal Mridha of village Khada under the same Upazila disclosed, at the night when the fishermen were taking preparations to cast their fishing nets in the sea in order to catch hilsa a gang of armed jungle pirates, 20/21in number, appeared there by a fishing trawler and began to beat the fishermen mercilessly. At that time fishermen Monir, Roni, Afzal and Jahangir Hossain jumped into the sea.
Later 3 of them were rescued from the sea. But Jahangir Hossain was drowned. At the time of their departure the jungle pirates looted 30 pieces of fishing nets worth Tk.10 lakh from the fishermen.
