UNB, Dhaka :
BNP on Monday warned that the judiciary will lose its head and effectiveness if parliament’s power to impeach
judges is restored.
“It’ll be tantamount to beheading the judiciary if parliament’s power to impeach judges is restored. It’ll also contribute to spate of killing, enforced disappearances, rape and other heinous crimes,” said senior BNP leader Gayeshwar Chandra Roy.
He was addressing a discussion titled ‘The Process of Impeachment of Judges and the Judiciary’ at the Jatiya Press Club arranged by Democratic Movement.
Gayeshwar, a BNP standing committee member, alleged that the government is conspiring to enable parliament to impeach Supreme Court judges in a bid to cling to power forever. “If it’s done, the judges won’t be able to work independently. People will lose their last resort of justice.”
Earlier on Thursday, the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on
Law Ministry Suranjit Sengupta said the restoration of the constitutional provision that enables parliament to impeach Supreme Court judges to ensure its sovereignty.
He came up with the remarks while addressing a press briefing after a committee meeting at the Jatiya Sangsad complex.
Opposing Suranjit’s assertion, Gayeshwar also warned the government that it will turn into a death trap for Awami League when it will remain out of power. “Now most judges, lawyers and officials employed in the judiciary are loyal to you. But when you will remain out of power, 80 percent judges will be against your choice. What will you do then?”
He also said the ruling party cadres will care little in indulging in dangerous crimes if parliament gets back power to remove judges.
The BNP leader also urged the lawyers to be vocal against the government’s ‘plot’ to enable parliament to sack judges.
