UNB, Dhaka :
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday alleged that the judiciary in the country now cannot play the independent role due to the government’s interference.
Talking to reporters after visiting late BNP secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain’s ailing wife Sahera Hossain at a city hospital, he also said their chairperson Khaleda Zia may unveil the party’s ‘Vision 2030’ this week
if they get a suitable venue for holding a press conference.
“We’ve long been saying democratic institutions can’t work independently in a country where democracy is absent. If the government creates pressure on the judiciary, it won’t be able to work with freedom,” he said.
The BNP leader further said, “What now the Chief Justice is saying (about judiciary) it has clearly demonstrated that the judiciary cannot work independently as there is no democracy in the country now. It has also exposed that the government is interfering in the judiciary.” Speaking at a reception accorded to him recently by Habiganj Bar Association in Habiganj, Chief Justice SK Sinha said, “The administration never wants the judiciary to function independently although it provides security to the administration, too. The bureaucracy always considers the judiciary a rival.” Fakhrul alleged that the government has also been playing an autocratic role in suppressing the opinions and voice of its opponents.
He urged the government to engage in talks with the political parties to get rid of the current situation and restore democracy in the country. “The government should come to the path of democracy shunning its arrogance.” By presenting the ‘Vision 2030’, the BNP leader said their party will inform the nation what it will do if it returns to power. “Our chairperson gave an outline of the Vision 2030 at our party’s sixth national council. “She’ll now present the details of it.” He, however, said the ‘Vision 2030’ has no relation with the framework of the election-time ‘supportive’ government and their party’s election manifesto.
The BNP secretary general renewed their party’s demand that the government announce the flood-affected haor areas disaster zone and take all-out steps to ease the sufferings of the victims. Sahera, 75, has been put on life support at the city’s Square Hospital since Monday as she fell ill seriously.
Fakhrul talked to doctors and Sahera’s family members and inquired about her health condition.
