Environmentalist groups on Tuesday demanded formation of a judicial inquiry commission to probe the past three years of “misdeeds and corruption” by Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA).
The demand came from a press conference arranged by the National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads & Railways-NCPSRR at Mukti Bhaban in city’s Purana Paltan. They raised seven demands at the programme.
The demands include forming a judicial inquiry commission to probe the BIWTA’s indiscipline and corruption in workforce recruitment, administration, and management; forming a technical experts
committee to test the quality of 13 dredgers and two rescue ships procured from abroad; forming a committee to audit all the expenditure related indiscipline; immediate appointment of a supervisor to stop corruption in river dredging including at Mongla-Ghasiakhali Channel; forming a secretary level committee to review the opinion of tender evaluation committee regarding large project order; taking legal action against the corrupt BIWTA officials including its former chairman Shamsuddoha Khandaker for leasing the riverside violating High Court verdict and the decision of river related inter-ministerial taskforce; cancellation of all the lease contracts on riverside; and eviction of illegal structures.
The green bodies threatened to publish the names of all “corrupt” BIWTA officials through a white paper, if their demands are not met soon.
NCPSRR convener Ashish Kumar Dey read out a written statement at the press conference.
Green Club of Bangladesh (GCB) president Nurur Rahman Selim, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) teacher Prof Abdur Rahim, Water Environment Institute chairman engineer M Enamul Haque, Bangladesh council to Protect Passengers Right president Tushar Rehman and former MP advocate Tasnim Rana spoke on the occasion.
