The Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday approved a big project involving Taka 1445.36 core for further development of Jahangirnagar University (JU).
The approval came from the 11th ECNEC meeting of the current fiscal year held at the NEC conference room in the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area with ECNEC Chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Under the development project, a total of 41 large infrastructures will be constructed on the campus by the next three years, said a JU press release.
Among the infrastructures, six 10-storey dormitories (three for male and three for female), five 10-storey residential buildings for teachers and officials, three 10-storey residential buildings for employees, a lecture theater and examination hall, a six-storey library building, vertical and horizontal extension of five buildings and a sports complex will be constructed.
Besides, purchasing of four vehicles for teachers and students and development of different streets on the campus are included under the massive development project.
Meanwhile, the JU authorities expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for approving such a massive development project for the university, through a programme held at the Senate Hall on Tuesday night.
Addressing the function, JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Farzana Islam said the six new dormitories to be built under the project will help maintain the residential identity of the university.
Some faculties and departments have not enough space to conduct their academic activities on the campus, she said, adding that the new faculty building and lecture theater will resolve this crisis.
The JU Vice-Chancellor thanked the Prime Minister, the Finance Minister, the Planning Minister, the Chairman of University Grand Commission (UGC), the education secretary and others involved for approving the massive development project.
Moderated by JU Registrar (acting) Rahima Kaniz, the function was addressed by Pro-VC (academic) Professor Nurul Alam, Pro-VC (administration) Professor Md Amir Hussain, Treasurer Professor Sheikh Md Monzurul Huq, deans of faculties, directors of institutes, provosts of dormitories, proctor and leaders of different student organizations, among others.
Teachers, officials, students and employees of the university greeted VC Professor Farzana Islam with flowers for getting the massive development project approved.
